Unique Weekend Getaway Near Melbourne: Stay in a Converted Bus in the Bush
Sometimes you don't need to go far to feel like you've escaped completely.
Just one hour from Melbourne, down a quiet road in Cottles Bridge on the edge of the Yarra Valley, sits Moss & Wheels — a thoughtfully converted coach nestled into a private corner of the Australian bush. It's the kind of place that's hard to describe until you're actually there, sitting on the deck with a coffee in hand, listening to nothing but birdsong and the rustle of eucalyptus leaves.
What is Moss & Wheels?
Moss & Wheels is a fully converted bus that's been transformed into a cosy, beautifully designed retreat for couples, solo travellers and creatives looking to slow down. Think a hammock strung between the trees, a firepit for cool evenings, elevated queen bed, a well-equipped kitchen with french press coffee and wine glasses and Starlink wifi if you need to stay connected — though most guests find themselves wanting to do anything but.
The interiors are sourced from local vintage stores, markets and boutiques, and the attention to detail shows. Guests consistently describe the space as feeling like a proper home, not a converted vehicle. One guest put it perfectly: it never once felt like they were "in a bus."
What does a stay actually feel like?
Wake up to the sounds of the bush — Moss & Wheels sits on a property with over 19 bird species spotted so far, plus regular visits from kangaroos, wombats, echidnas and the occasional deer. Mornings here have a particular magic to them: coffee on the deck, fresh eucalyptus-scented air, and no reason to rush anywhere.
Spend the afternoon in the hammock, explore the surrounding area, or simply do nothing at all. When the sun goes down, the firepit comes into its own — guests rave about stargazing from the outdoor space, glass of wine in hand, with the friendly resident kelpie sometimes stopping by for company.
The space is private and secluded despite being on the same property as the owner's home. As one guest described it: completely private and peaceful, exactly as promised.
Getting out and exploring
